American Football | GFL: Dramatic! Dresden Monarchs miss second championship title

As of: October 12, 2024 7:51 p.m

The Dresden Monarchs narrowly missed out on their second championship title after 2021. The Saxons lost to defending champions Potsdam Royals in the “GFL Bowl” with 21:27 (7:19). In the East German championship duel on Saturday in Essen it remained exciting until the last minute.

After a weaker start, the Monarchs found their way into the game as time went on in front of 9,712 spectators and had the chance of victory until the final minute. Potsdam initially dominated and quickly made it 11-0 (13th) under the direction of quarterback Jaylon Henderson. Afterwards the defense increased and the first points for the Saxons came on the scoreboard (7:11). At halftime it was 7:19 because Dresden couldn’t get decisive access to the outstanding Jaylon Henderson.

Even after the change, the Monarchs struggled and were unable to score any points from their possession. In general, there were no points for the teams in the third round. In the final section, Dresden finally got hot. Quarterback Brock Domann passed perfectly to Jordi Torrededia, who forced an important touchdown. After Florian Finke’s extra point, the Saxons were up 14:19. But Jaylon Henderson immediately turned things around again and Heiko Bals scored (14:27).

Wide receiver Ricky Smalling brought the Monarchs back into the game with a touchdown (21:27). And although the Saxons’ defense put Jaylon Henderson under increasing pressure, the big turnaround failed to materialize. Monarchs quarterback Brock Domann threw the ball with just under half a minute left in the fourth attempt. The Potsdam team then let the clock run down and secured the title.
