Tennessee State University became the center of a heartbreaking tragedy on Saturday, October 12, when a man was fatally shot and nine other people were injured following the homecoming parade. The injured victims included three children, according to NBC News.

According to the WSMV update, Nashville police said the horrific incident resulted from two groups shooting at each other from opposite sides of the street. “From the bullet casings, we can see that there were shots from one side of the street and then from the other side,” police spokesman Don Aaron told the media. They opened fire outside the campus on Jefferson Street around 5:10 p.m. At this point the parade was over. However, the parking lots were still full of people.

Three victims of the Tennessee State University shooting were minors

Aaron said one of the three children shot was a 12-year-old and the other two were 14-year-olds. Their injuries were not considered critical. Additionally, it was confirmed that the deceased victim was a 24-year-old man. It is not yet known whether the victims were students. While some were injured by gunfire, others were reportedly critically injured.

“A total of 10 gunshot victims are currently in area hospitals. 5 were transported by NFD. 5 arrived in private vehicles. A 24-year-old man has died. 3 uncritical juvenile victims are at Vandy Peds. At least one of the injured is believed to have been involved in the shooting,” Metro Nashville Police tweeted on X, formerly Twitter.

As part of the ongoing investigation, police found a weapon on the street and believe handguns were used in the altercation. Investigators are interviewing gunshot victims and, as Aaron pointed out, “things are starting to fall into place.” Officials are still trying to determine how many shooters were at the scene. At least one person who ended up in the hospital is believed to have been involved in the shooting. Investigators are checking surveillance cameras to identify suspects.

A separate incident occurred at Nissan Stadium, where the school’s homecoming football game was being held, according to Tennessee State University officials. The investigation into shots heard at the scene is ongoing. Police said they found no victims. It is currently not clear whether there was a shooting in the stadium.

The spokesman emphasized that the brutal development was unexpected because “there were police officers everywhere.” Meanwhile, Nashville Fire Department spokeswoman Kendra Loney said some firefighters who helped victims at the scene were there to have fun. “Our staff told me about some moments where they ripped off their belts and used them as tourniquets, for example,” she added.

Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell also took to social media to condemn the violence. “What was a joyous atmosphere is very different tonight due to a senseless act of violence by people who didn’t care who else might get caught in the crossfire,” he wrote on X/Twitter.

He added: “Unfortunately, many in our community are familiar with the pain that gun violence causes. It hurts every time. We are grateful for our first responders who quickly provided aid and secured the scene of the accident – and with sadness and prayers for the victims.”
