In MMA, fighters compete in different weight classes. Flying Uwe and Ediz der Breite will step into the octagon at welterweight.

An MMA fight usually lasts three rounds. Each round usually lasts five minutes. MMA title fights, on the other hand, are fought over five rounds. The fight is over early if a fighter loses by knockout (KO), technical knockout (TKO) or by submission. If no decision has been made during the fight, the winner will be determined by points decision.

The fighters are allowed to use various techniques such as punches, kicks and ground fighting techniques (grappling) to win the fight. However, there are strict rules: hitting sensitive areas such as the eyes, nose, mouth or ears is prohibited. Headbutting, biting and attacks on the back of the head or throat are also not permitted.

There are clear rules regarding clothing: Fighters must compete in shorts, and wearing shoes or tops is also prohibited. However, protective equipment such as abdominal protection and a mouth guard are mandatory.
