Field of participants: World tennis stars come to Vienna for the Erste Bank Open 2024

At this year’s Erste Bank Open in Vienna, the field of participants is again top-class. In addition to Dominic Thiem, who is playing his last professional tennis tournament here, Alexander Zverev, who leads the field, last year’s finalist Daniil Medvedev, US Open finalist Taylor Fritz and many other well-known players are also coming to Vienna.

VIENNA. From October 19th to 27th, 2024 First Bank OpenAustria’s most prestigious tennis tournament, takes place in the Vienna Stadthalle. An emotional moment is coming at this year’s ATP 500 tournament: Dominic Thiemthe former Grand Slam winner and crowd favorite, will say goodbye to professional tennis in front of his home crowd. The Austrian is competing thanks to a wildcard, but after a long and successful career this will be his last tournament.

The weeks there were a “rollercoaster ride” for Austria’s long-time number one, said Thiem at a press conference at the beginning of October. The 2019 Vienna winner is still looking forward to his last game in the Stadthalle: “At the same time, I’ll be very happy and very relieved when it’s over. That’s a good thing, because if it wasn’t like that, it would be the wrong step. That’s why it fits exactly as it is.”

However, one prominent name is missing: defending champion Jannik Sinner has canceled his participation. The world number one player from Italy will instead take part in an invitation tournament in Saudi Arabia and then take a break.

Top players in the field of participants

The field at the Erste Bank Open remains top-class. It is led by the German Alexander Zverev, current number three in the world rankings. Daniil Medvedev, last year’s finalist, and US Open finalist Taylor Fritz are also among the favorites for the title. In addition to them, other top players Grigor Dimitrov, Alex de Minaur, Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe are starting in Vienna. Sebastian Korda, who is also one of the top ten players, completes the strong line-up.

In addition, secret favorites such as Matteo Berrettini, Lorenzo Musetti and the up-and-coming Alexei Popyrin will ensure excitement. Jack Draper, Jordan Thompson and Zhizhen Zhang could also be good for surprises and shake up the tournament.

Thiem’s last appearance

An emotional highlight of the tournament will undoubtedly be the farewell to Dominic Thiem. The former US Open winner will end his tennis career in Vienna and say goodbye to his fans. Thiem is the only Austrian in the main draw after Sebastian Ofner is out due to injury. The hope now lies in a possible wildcard for other local players such as Joel Schwärzler and Jurij Rodionov, who would otherwise have to secure their place through qualification.
