Football: USK Samson Druck St. Michael narrowly wins against UFC Eben

The USK Samson Druck St. Michael was able to prevail with a narrow victory in a hard-fought away game against UFC Eben. Both teams had their chances, but ultimately a penalty decided the game.

ST. MICHAEL IM LUNGAU, EXACTLY. In the away game of USK Samson Druck St. Michael against the home-strong UFC Eben, the visiting team found it difficult to build up their usual game right from the start. The pitch was deep and difficult to play on due to the recent rains. As a result, high balls dominated the game and both teams tried to create scoring opportunities with the second ball.

First chance for Eben

UFC Eben had the first clear chance of the game in the 11th minute when Valentin Palzenberger appeared alone in front of St. Michael’s goalkeeper Dominik Glabatsch, but the ball shot just wide of the goal. On the other side, Hannes Gruber had a good header chance after a throw-in from Mike Macheiner, but it was thwarted by home goalkeeper Markus Ebbing.

Still dangerous

Eben remained dangerous, and in the 22nd minute Stefan Scherer had another great opportunity after a corner, but was again denied by Glabatsch, who reacted strongly. St. Michael finally took the lead in the 28th minute: Marcel Bernhofer took advantage of a cross from Mike Macheiner, who slotted in to make it 1-0. Shortly before halftime, Palzenberger had another chance to equalize for Eben, but he put the ball too far forward, so it remained 1-0 at the break.

Better in the game after the break

St. Michael got into the game better in the second half. In the 49th minute, Thomas König narrowly missed the goal with a shot. In the 54th minute, UFC Eben managed to equalize through Anil Kirbas after a poke in the penalty area. Afterwards, both teams neutralized each other and chances to score remained rare.

Free kick converted

In the 68th minute, St. Michael was awarded a free kick. Tristan Schiefer set up Felix Pfeifenberger, who was fouled on the edge of the penalty area. Marcel Bernhofer safely converted the penalty to give the team a 2-1 lead; it was already his 16th goal of the season in the ninth game.

Sovereign defense

After this goal, St. Michael defended confidently and did not allow any further significant chances for Eben. Substitute Patrick Berger stabilized the defense, especially on high balls. St. Michael was closer to the third goal than Eben was to the equalizer, but Thomas König was unlucky in the 81st minute when his shot bounced off the crossbar and back into the field.

Crucial injury time

In stoppage time, Tristan Schiefer could have finally decided the game, but his shot went just over the goal. In the end it was a narrow 2-1 for the guests. Despite Eben’s strong first half, the win for the Payer team was deserved due to the better second half.

Home game follows

Next week St. Michael is expecting the 1b team from the western league team St. Johann, currently fourth in the table. Kick-off is on Sunday, October 20, 2024 at 3 p.m.
