Home Assistant: Integrate vehicle data, fuel prices and routes

Modern cars are just computers on wheels – the user can, for example, view car data in an app or control the air conditioning. The following applies: If something is intelligent enough, then it can be integrated into the smart home central Home Assistant. The system is free, open source and supports almost every smart device, from light bulbs to cars.

  • Cars can be integrated into Home Assistant to display data such as engine status or fuel level.
  • In addition, Home Assistant can monitor gas station prices and display route information that can make daily commutes easier.
  • With notifications, the user stays informed about all relevant events surrounding the car.

Anyone who integrates their car into Home Assistant can query the current engine status, see how much fuel is still in the tank or whether a door is still open. This data can be displayed in a dashboard or used in notifications. This keeps the user up to date if the tank content falls below a certain percentage or the car reports a problem.

Whether a car can be displayed in Home Assistant always depends on the manufacturer and model – and whether the user pays extra for a cloud service from the manufacturer. We’ll use an example to show how this works with a current Volvo – with this model it’s a little more complicated, others are easier to integrate.
