Field of participants, draw, top seeds, opponents of the Austrians

LINZ. The draw for the European Table Tennis Championships took place in Linz on Sunday. In all five competitions, Austria has one starter or one pairing in the main field. The other domestic participants will have to go through the qualifications, which start on Tuesday October 15th at the Tips Arena.

Here is an overview of the field of participants and the opponents of the local players in the qualification:

Sofia Polcanova placed second behind doubles partner Bernadette Szöcs

Sofia Polcanova from Linz will start the title defense project as number two. Her Romanian doubles partner leads the seeding list. In third place is Jia Nan Yuan from France ahead of Nina Mittelham from Germany.

Difficult groups for the Austrians in qualifying

Apart from Polcanova, all other starters have to qualify. Karoline Mischek and Anastasia Sterner have a reasonable starting position as pool runners-up in their group of four. Nina Skerbinz in third and Liu Yuan in fourth have a harder time in their groups. The winners of the groups play against a group runner-up in a play-off round for promotion in the 1/32 final.

Realistic chances for the ÖTTV men in their qualification groups

In the men’s singles, Daniel Habesohn is seeded at number 23. For the other five men’s participants, the draw resulted in feasible groups. Andreas Levenko, Robert Gardos and Maciej Kolodziejczyk are top seeds in their groups of three. Julian Rzihauschek and Liu Zhenlong have a decent chance of progressing as pool two. As with the women, the winners of the groups play against a group runner-up in a play-off round for promotion in the 1/32 final.

Felix Lebrun is ranked number one

The 18-year-old Frenchman Felix Lebrun leads the field of participants as number one. Behind him was the Olympic silver medalist Truls Möregardh, ahead of the two Germans Patrick Franziska as well as the defending champion Dang Qui and the Slovenian Darko Jorgic.

Austrian medalists from Munich among the top seeds in doubles and mixed doubles

Austria has a good chance of winning precious metal in the doubles and mixed doubles competitions. In the men’s doubles, the silver medalists from Munich are number six. The defending champions in women’s doubles, Polcanova/Szöcs, are only ranked number seven. In the mixed doubles, Sofia Polcanova and Robert Gardos are fourth in the seeding list.
