Frequent drivers need certain cars for long highway journeys

Not all cars are suitable for long highway journeys. Here is a list of the best models for frequent drivers who often travel long distances. In addition to the usual premium models from Mercedes and BMW, these also include older models that are very efficient for long stretches of motorway. It’s worth a look, and not just for your wallet!

Drivers who regularly have to drive long distances need a suitable vehicle that has been designed from the ground up for long distances. But not everyone makes the right decision when choosing their new car, as they may be more guided by its appearance. There are some basic factors that should be taken into account for long-distance drivers. For example, experts recommend choosing vehicles from well-known brands where spare parts are readily available, such as Volkswagen, Opel, BMW or Fiat.

Let’s take a closer look at the best diesel and gasoline models that are perfect for long highway trips.

Mercedes and BMW are there

Among the best cars for the highway is of course Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which came onto the new market this year with a version. The E-Class was developed precisely to reclaim long stretches of highway while ensuring comfort and high driving quality. You feel safe while driving, the engine is quiet and responsive, and running costs remain low thanks to an average fuel consumption of just under five liters/100km. The equipment is also comprehensive, including cruise control.

Another top model for long journeys is the BMW 3 Series. The 318d and 320d versions in particular are ideal for this type of travel, with an all-wheel drive version also available with the xDrive model. Here too, consumption is around 5 liters/100km.

Even older models are still efficient

The Jaguar XF is another highway model that has been a great choice since its introduction in 2015. Jaguar engineers have developed a vehicle that delivers fluid ride and excellent handling on all roads. With the 2.0-liter D200 engine, which delivers 200 hp, the XF also consumes around 5L per 100 kilometers. It is equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Despite the new model for 2024, the 2015 Skoda Superb remains a highly functional choice, with a comfortable, spacious interior and a good balance of performance and fuel economy. The 1.6 TDI Greenline version achieves up to 23 km per liter, which corresponds to an average consumption of less than 5L per 100km. The 2.0 TDI 150 represents an even better compromise.

Likewise, the 2015 Ford Mondeo remains very popular, also thanks to its excellent highway performance with the 2.0 TDCi 150 Econetic engine and a consumption of around 5 liters per 100 km. In addition, the Mondeo offers a spacious interior and extensive standard equipment, especially in newer models.

Major car brands for highway travel

The 2018 Volvo V60 is also one of the best options for long trips. Although Volvo is now focusing more on SUVs, the V60 remains one of the last outstanding station wagons, known for its high level of comfort, which was achieved, among other things, by working with orthopedic surgeons on the seat design. The D3 model is the most economical variant with a consumption of around 5L per 100km.

Citroën shines with the C5 Aircross, one of the most comfortable crossovers on the market, whose smooth ride compensates for a slightly lower maneuverability. With an identical fuel consumption of around 5L/100km, the C5 Aircross is also an excellent choice.

Two older models and one from 2024

Although the term “older” seems a bit stronger, both the Audi A6 and the Kia Ceed Sportwagon stand out for their high quality. The Audi A6 impressed with advanced on-board technology and 39 driver assistance functions, including adaptive cruise control and parking pilot. The range is slightly less than the other models, but the quality remains outstanding.

The Kia Ceed Sportwagon scores with an impressive range of up to 25 km/l (lap 4L at 100m) and a high level of interior comfort. Finally, we recommend the Volkswagen Tiguan, especially the 2024 model, which is still available as a diesel. This family SUV offers a high level of comfort, a spacious trunk and extensive standard equipment. Despite its size and the slight loss of range that comes with it, it remains one of the best options on the market.
Choosing the right car for long highway journeys depends on various factors, including comfort, fuel efficiency and technical features. Whether it’s tried-and-tested premium models like Mercedes-Benz and BMW or older but still efficient vehicles like the Jaguar XF or Ford Mondeo – there are numerous options that are perfectly tailored to frequent drivers.

Newer models such as the Volkswagen Tiguan or the Citroën C5 Aircross also offer the latest technologies and a high level of comfort to make long journeys as pleasant as possible. Ultimately, the decision will of course fall on the vehicle that best suits both your individual needs and your budget. But you should always take the expert advice into account and let the car model be influenced not only by its appearance, but also by the available repair options and spare parts procurement. That’s exactly what the small, subtle difference can be if the car breaks down in the middle of nowhere.
