Information appointment in the morning: Russian espionage and sabotage are increasing

Russia is becoming more and more of a threat to Germany too. This is what the heads of the Federal Intelligence Service, the Military Counterintelligence Service and the Office for the Protection of the Constitution say. This and other topics of the morning with Jonathan Hadem.

All three services are recording more and more cases of espionage and sabotage in Germany. In addition, Russia is increasingly arming itself and, according to experts’ estimates, could be in a position to attack NATO by the end of the decade.

The people in Germany must finally be made aware of this threat, demands the deputy chairman of the Parliamentary Control Committee, Roderich Kiesewetter (CDU). The German secret services must be able to work more efficiently, he demands in the ARD Tagesthemen:

It is of little use if we have the most controlled services. We also have to have the most efficient services because the threat in Germany is increasing. Russia sees us in focus. But Russia is not alone, it is cooperating with China, including in Germany against us – and [Russland] cooperates with Iran, including with Islamist terrorism against us. Jewish life is in danger. […] There were targeted killings of Ukrainian soldiers in Germany. […] Our services also ask parliamentarians to improve the legal situation. And the population also needs to be better informed about the threats.

According to the EU authority, this number has been almost stable since 2015 – although member states have tried to further improve the situation. The greatest burden on surface and groundwater comes from agriculture, primarily because of the intensive use of nutrients and pesticides.
