Bengaluru: Mother strangles daughters before taking her own life; The husband, a taxi driver, also later commits suicide

In a shocking incident, a 29-year-old housewife allegedly strangled her two young daughters before taking her own life at their home in north Bengaluru on Sunday afternoon. Later that evening, her husband allegedly hanged himself after discovering their bodies, a TOI report said.

The deceased are Avinash, a taxi driver, his wife Mamatha and their daughters Anaya (2) and Adhira (4). The couple originally hails from Kalaburagi district and had been living in Bengaluru for the past six years.

Suspicion of marital discord

Authorities suspect that a marital dispute may have prompted Mamatha to commit the crime. Avinash, who was saddened by the sight of his family, is believed to have committed suicide. The tragedy occurred in Yeddyurappa Nagar, Singanayakanahalli, near Yelahanka. The bodies were discovered around 9:30 am on Monday morning by Avinash’s younger brother Udhay Kumar, a sports coach. Udhay, who also lived with the family, had returned from Kalaburagi only in the morning.

Investigations are ongoing

Police have registered a murder case against Mamatha for the children’s death and an unnatural death case for Mamatha and Avinash. Police Commissioner CK Baba commented, “The exact cause of death of the children will be known after receiving the post-mortem report. Avinash was at work from morning to evening. A detailed investigation will be carried out.”

Financial pressures mentioned by family

Dattu Rathore, Avinash’s cousin, said there was no evidence of problems in the couple’s marriage. He mentioned that Avinash had recently sought financial help from his uncle to clear a credit card bill, leading the family to suspect that financial pressure may have played a role in the tragedy. “We suspect that someone was pressurizing him to pay the bill,” Rathore added.
