On October 3, at approximately 3:06 p.m., Columbus Junction Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 2008 Nissan Maxima driven by 46-year-old Francisco Nunez of Muscatine. Nunez would stop, get out of his vehicle and then get back in. Nunez then fled west from downtown Columbus Junction, nearly colliding with several vehicles traveling at high speeds. He continued on Highway 92 where he struck a roadblock near X17 and then the vehicle rolled several times. The accident caused the driver to run south into the woods. A cordon was set up with officers from the Columbus Junction Police Department and Louisa County Sheriff’s deputies, who later used K9 officer Drake to locate the person and use a drone. A sheriff’s deputy suffered minor injuries while trying to restrain the person in the woods. Nunez complained of injuries but was later released to a local hospital. Nunez remains in the Louisa County Jail on a $7,500.00 cash bond. As a result of this incident, Nunez was charged with the following offenses: misdemeanor evading a Class C felony, driving while OWI revoked (severe misdemeanor), interfering with official acts (simple misdemeanor), driving while on probation (simple misdemeanor), and reckless driving (simple misdemeanor). Administrative offense and multiple traffic charges. Columbus Junction Police were assisted by Louisa County Ambulance, Mincer’s Towing, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa DOT and the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office.
