Santa Monica College has been closed after a shooting on campus left a man seriously injured

Santa Monica College (SMC) is closed today (Tuesday) after an employee was shot and seriously injured Monday evening.

The shooting happened at the Center for Media & Design around 9:50 p.m. The center at 1660 Stewart Street is not the main campus, but one of several outdoor facilities at the university. Santa Monica police are investigating the incident and have confirmed that an employee was shot. The police are actively looking for a suspect.

Social media posts and reports from residents said the victim was shot in the head but survived and was taken to a local hospital.

This is the second time a shooting has occurred at an SMC facility.

SMC’s main campus was the scene of the shooting on June 7, 2013. In this case, two police officers confronted 23-year-old John Zawahri at the SMC library. Zawahri shot his father and brother, set his house on fire, and went on a killing spree that left five innocent victims dead. He attempted to enter the room where several people were barricaded when he was confronted by officers. Zawari, armed with an assault weapon, was shot after firing at the officers.
