A trend among male teenagers

A trend among male teenagers

Good evening, dear readers,

In the state elections in Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg, the proportion of young people who voted for the AfD was particularly high. This trend can now also be seen in part in the representative Shell youth study, which was presented in Berlin on Tuesday. A total of 2,509 young people between the ages of twelve and 25 shared their opinions on various topics – including their political views. The result: Young men in particular now tend to place themselves on the right-wing spectrum. A quarter of them stated that they were “right-wing” or “more right-wing” politically. Five years ago this share was 16 percent. For young women, the number has increased only minimally compared to 2019 – from 10 to 11 percent.

Shift to the right among young people?

Given the recent election results, the results hardly come as a surprise. Study author Mathias Albert and his team do not yet see a general shift to the right among young people, as they explained, but they do see a trend among male teenagers. My colleague Imre Grimm writes: “On the political fringes, the group of those who yearn for authoritarian leadership is growing, for a supposedly ‘strong hand’ that will deal with the multiple problems of the present with paternalistic harshness and under-complex snap measures.” He the results of the He explains in his commentary that the study appears primarily as a “cry for help” and a “clear warning.”

Leweling impresses in the DFB jersey

The mood among the German national football team could hardly be better at the moment. This is largely due to offensive player Jamie Leweling, who had a dream debut in the 1-0 win against the Netherlands on Monday evening and became the match winner with an impressive goal. The 23-year-old from VfB Stuttgart even surprised Julian Nagelsmann with his performance. “I didn’t expect him to play so well now,” said the national coach.

What many people don’t know is that Leweling almost played for another country. My colleague Hendrik Buchheister has summarized the unusual biography of the Nuremberg native for you – and also explains what former national coach Hansi Flick has to do with the whole story.

More Christians than women

It’s hard to believe: There are currently more men with the first name Christian in management positions on the boards of the 160 most important German stock exchange companies than women. This emerges from an evaluation by the German-Swedish Allbright Foundation, which advocates for more diversity in business. In an international comparison, Germany is still lagging behind – even though the proportion of women rose by 2.3 percent to almost 20 percent last year.

My colleague Andreas Niesmann has put together for you which German companies are still performing best and what the current situation looks like in other industrialized nations such as Great Britain, the USA, France and Sweden.
