Here’s a recent AP NHL story

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Florida Panthers coach Paul Maurice was unwilling after a loss to jump to conclusions about how his reigning Stanley Cup champions will fare without captain Aleksander Barkov, who is out for two to three weeks with a lower-body injury injury will result.

It didn’t help that the Panthers were also missing forwards Matthew Tkachuk and Tomas Nosek in Saturday night’s 5-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabers.

“We will not use today as a judgment,” Maurice said.

And yet he was disappointed by the lack of resistance shown by the Panthers in a game in which they scored first before conceding four goals in a row.

“We have won a lot of hockey games in the past without them in our lineup and you have to play a style of play that allows for that. And we’re not there yet,” he said. “We haven’t played a game where you can reasonably survive without a few guys in the lineup. But I think we can get better at it.”

Barkov, a two-time Frank J. Selke winner as the NHL’s top defensive forward, was injured after crashing into the boards while trying to stop Tim Stutzle from scoring without a goal in Thursday’s 3-1 loss in Ottawa to score a goal. Maurice expressed optimism that Barkov will return in time – if not sooner – for the Panthers’ two NHL Global Series games against the Dallas Stars on Nov. 1 and 2, which will be played in the center’s hometown of Tampere, Finland become.

Tkachuk is day-to-day after being sidelined due to illness. Nosek has missed all three games due to an upper-body injury he suffered last month.

The injuries led to Maurice changing his lineup and making forward Patrick Giles his NHL debut.

The Panthers’ goals were scored by defensemen Nate Schmidt and Sam Bennett, who were tipped by Sam Reinhart for Florida’s first power play goal of the season.

It wasn’t enough for Florida, which has suffered two straight losses since its season-opening win against Boston.

“We have everything we need in this room,” Schmidt said. “Now it’s time for the boys to close the gap. They are two people who are irreplaceable, but we have the people who can go out and reproduce in our system and what we can do.”

Goaltender Spencer Knight blamed himself for stopping 22 of 26 shots in his first NHL start in 18 months. Tage Thompson’s opening goal went through Knight’s legs with a 25-foot shot and he was slow to recover, allowing Henri Jokiharju to make it 3-1 with a shot from the left side.

“I really think the loss starts with me and ends with me. I can’t make plays like that,” said Knight, who is making a comeback after joining the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program in 2023 to help deal with OCD and spending last season in the minors.

Knight declined to use Barkov’s absence as an excuse.

“If you don’t have him in the lineup, obviously you have to make some changes,” Knight said. “But I think we have enough confidence in this space regardless of who is in and who is out.”

The Panthers wrap up their four-game road trip on Tuesday in Boston and a day later in Columbus.
