Flooding in Soweto after heavy rains saddens South Africans

SOWETO, JOHANNESBURG – The storm in Gauteng left Soweto’s streets flooded and many South Africans pointed the finger at the government, accusing it of failing to adequately maintain drainage systems.

Streets flooded in Soweto

The South African Meteorological Service recently warned that severe thunderstorms and localized flooding would occur in Gauteng and other parts of the country.

The downpour caused many streets in Gauteng to be flooded, and Soweto residents were not spared. During the heavy rains, cars got stuck on the road and many became stranded and unable to move forward. This included Klipvalley Road near Nancefield Hostel, where cars and emergency services were stranded.

South Africans blame the government

Speaking about the flood, Nertiens blamed the government for failing to properly maintain drainage systems in Soweto’s townships.

“If the ANC government maintained drainage systems, we would not have been flooded.”

Floods in the Western Cape leave thousands homeless
