Giants All-Pro OT Andrew Thomas expected to miss season after foot surgery: sources

New York Giants stalwart left tackle Andrew Thomas is expected to miss the remainder of the season after undergoing successful surgery on Wednesday to repair a Lisfranc injury in his foot, league sources said Wednesday.

NFL Network first reported the news.

Thomas injured his foot on the Giants’ only touchdown drive in Sunday’s loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Although Thomas stayed in the game, he seemed to be struggling.

It’s a brutal blow for Thomas, who was injured in last season’s opener and missed seven games, contributing to the Giants having a dismal season with offensive line play en route to the second-most sacks in NFL history (85). .

After an offseason full of changes with a new coaching position in Carmen Bricillo and a focus on the group in free agency, the Giants appeared to have managed to hit the ground running this year. All five starters played 100 percent of the snaps together in the first six games of the season, forming a consistent group with good chemistry. While the group may not be considered the top of the league, at least it wasn’t the talk of the town like it was last year.

Now Evan Neal and Josh Ezeudu are the internal options available for the position. The big question will be whether the Giants move current right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor to left tackle and use one or the other at right tackle. Neal missed significant playing time due to offseason ankle surgery and rehab, which obviously gave Ezeudu an advantage. During Sunday’s game, Ezeudu appeared to be warming up on the sidelines while Thomas caught the attention of the coaching staff, but Thomas remained in the game.

In July 2023, Thomas signed a five-year extension for $117.5, with two years remaining on his rookie contract. The All-Pro offense prioritized “safety” when it came to getting the deal done early.

“I would say safety was the most important thing, guarantees and things like that,” Thomas said at the time. “Especially given my history of ankle injuries and things like that. When you play on the offensive line, people come your way every game, you want to be on the safe side. You don’t hope for injuries, but we know that things like that happen in this league.”

The Giants’ next game is at home against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.
