Syracuse University is suspending the fraternity after a “disgusting” video was posted online

Syracuse University has suspended the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity after a video posted on social media allegedly showed students being mistreated at the organization’s house.

The video, published on X-Tuesday afternoon, has more than 170,000 views. In the video, two people can be seen vomiting on two other people lying on the ground. The camera pans to show a person tied to a pole with their mouth taped shut and their arms outstretched. While the post says it happened at a University of Mississippi fraternity, a university spokesperson said SU has evidence it happened on SU’s campus.

“I am outraged by the actions seen in these videos and condemn this behavior,” Chancellor Kent Syverud said in a university statement.

The actions shown in the video endanger the well-being of some students and could be considered a crime, Syverud said. The university reported the incident to Syracuse police. SU’s Department of Public Safety and Community Standards Office have already begun an investigation into the incident, he said, and the fraternity must suspend all activities until the investigation is complete.

The fraternity was placed on disciplinary and social probation in 2022 after its members were found to have violated the student code of conduct. The probation ended in May of this year.

“Hazing and related actions that endanger our students constitute a serious violation of both university policy and New York law,” Syverud said.
