Police make arrest in Garfield Heights Dunkin’ Donuts murder

GARFIELD HEIGHTS, OH – A suspect has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a man outside the Dunkin’ Donuts on Turney Road earlier this month.

Investigators say the suspect, whose name police have not released, was arrested in the Columbus area and is awaiting extradition to Northeast Ohio.

The suspect’s specific allegations are currently unknown.

The shooting

On October 4th, Jose Ervin Jr. was with a group at the Turney Pit Stop gas station. They ordered food and drinks after leaving a neighborhood bar.

Surveillance video from the gas station obtained by News 5 shows an argument between Ervin Jr. and another man in a white shirt. Ervin and a woman who identified herself as a bartender walked back to the car after receiving their orders.

The two men began to argue, but the two women intervened. In the video, you can see Ervin Jr. backing away as the man in the white shirt pulls a gun from his pocket and chases him across Turney Road. Multiple gunshots are heard at Ervin as he stumbled and fell onto a curb in front of Dunkin’ Donuts.

Ervin later died in hospital. The unknown man and the two women get into the car and drive away.

His family told News 5 they were glad police made the arrest before saying goodbye at a celebration of life service Saturday.

After the shooting, Ervin’s family urged the gunman to turn himself in.

“Give yourself. You see what you’ve done to my family.”

Ervin is survived by a wife, Scierra, about whom News 5 wrote an article in August 2023. The couple, who both had birthdays on the same day, gave birth to twins on his birthday. The story made national headlines.
