“I manifested myself that day,” says a Brazilian woman who became a police officer and caught her father’s murderer

“I manifested myself that day,” says a Brazilian woman who became a police officer and caught her father’s murderer

Little Gislayne Silva De deus was just nine years old when her father was shot. At that tender age, when she lost a parent, a murderer was on the loose and she was just a vulnerable child. In 2024, 35-year-old Gislayne is now a police officer and has her father’s murderer behind bars.

How Gislayne lost her father

As confirmed by metroGislayne’s father, Giraldo Jose Vicente De Deus, was shot 20 years ago in a bar where he frequented. The story goes that in February 1999, Giraldo was playing pool with his friend at a local bar when he was suddenly confronted and immediately threatened by a man named Raimundo Alves Gomes over a £20 debt. Gomes was very persistent in his efforts to get immediate payment and did not accept Deus’ offer of a freezer. Things took a violent turn sooner than expected and Giraldo was shot in the head.

Law and order in the hands of the daughter

An arrest warrant was issued for Gomes in 2016, but he managed to flee the country and avoid punishment.

For Giraldo’s daughter, this was unacceptable. She set out to literally take matters into her own hands. At the age of 18 she began studying law. Her professional career and personal pursuit of justice gained momentum when she joined the police force. Soon after, she was assigned to the general homicide squad. After years of searching for her father’s killer, she finally located him on a farm in the Nova Cidade region, near Boa Vista.

He has been behind bars since September 25th of this year.

“You will pay now,” the killer was told

After this heartbreaking and time-consuming search ended after 25 years and Gislayne finally caught 60-year-old Gomes, she told him: “You are here because of me. You’re going to pay for it now.”

Gislayne also revealed to the media that she had quite an emotional awakening after catching her father’s murderer. She remembered her father saying he was an honest and hard-working person. They were a close-knit family and after their father’s death she and her sister suffered a series of breakdowns. They were completely heartbroken. She burst into tears. “I had accepted that this day might not come,” she said.
