There are currently some upheavals surrounding YouTube Premium that point to a major change in the medium term: subscriptions have recently become more expensive in some countries and it is expected that price increases will not be long in coming in other countries too. It was already known that a comeback of YouTube Premium Lite had been tested and now the package should be available again for the first users in Germany and other European countries.

YouTube Premium Lite is exactly what the name suggests: a lite version of the existing YouTube Premium. This means that you enjoy largely freedom from advertising, but otherwise you have to forego all the advantages of the normal subscription: There is no download option, no background playback and no access to YouTube Music Premium. The whole thing costs 5.99 euros per month and is therefore only half the price of what the normal premium subscription costs.

But that’s not all, because there are a few more BUT: The advertising freedom only applies to “most” YouTube videos. This means that you may still see advertising in some videos, especially music videos. Additionally, this only applies to the video player itself, while you will still see advertising on the homepage and in search results. It is therefore not a real ad-free subscription, but rather an ad-reduced subscription.
