Menendez brothers soon to be released? They brutally murdered their parents

  • Will the Menendez brothers be released soon?
  • There could be a renegotiation
  • The brothers murdered their parents in 1989

Family members and prominent speakers gathered at a press conference at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in downtown Los Angeles on October 16th “a strong sign of unity” for the Menendez brothers as their case is reviewed for a possible new sentence.

The family hopes prosecutors will consider reviewing the sentences, which could happen in the next few weeks, according to Vanity Fair. This means that the Menendez brothers, who have been in prison for over 30 years, could soon be released.

Will the Menendez brothers be released soon?

Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón is currently reviewing evidence that was not admitted in the original trial.

“A decision regarding the Menendez case has not yet been made. Once DA Gascón has made a decision, the victims’ family members and the public will be informed”a spokesman for the public prosecutor’s office told the Daily Mail.

Interest in the Menendez brothers’ case has been reignited by two Netflix documentaries. These shed light on the events of 1989 when the brothers, then 18 and 21 years old, murdered their parents in their luxurious Beverly Hills home. They shot them both: six bullets hit father José and ten hit mother Kitty’s body.

After the crime, she claimed to have found her parents murdered, which caused a stir in the wealthy community of Beverly Hills. Police arrested Lyle Menendez in March 1990, seven months after the crime, citing greed as the motive as the brothers expected an inheritance of fourteen million dollars.

The Menendez brothers’ motive was self-defense

In contrast to the verdict at the time, according to the defense, greed was not the motive – in fact it was self-defense! The brothers had lived in constant mortal fear of their father. José Menendez, a successful Hollywood negotiator, is said to have sexually abused his sons for years. Lyle was a victim of these attacks as a child, and for Eric it even lasted until shortly before the crime. According to the brothers’ statements, their mother knew about the abuse.

The family was convinced from the beginning that a charge of manslaughter rather than murder would have been more appropriate, said the brothers’ lawyers. Defense attorney Mark Geragos emphasized that manslaughter was not even an issue for the jury during the trial.

Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón announced in early October that his office would review the new evidence and make a decision on whether a retrial was warranted in the infamous case.

In particular, he is investigating allegations made by Roy Rossello, a former member of the band Menudo, who claims that José Menendez abused him in the 1980s. These allegations could bolster the Menendez brothers’ appeals.
