Hyundai is recalling some vehicles due to fire risks and urging owners to park outdoors

DETROIT (AP) — Hyundai is telling owners of nearly 1,600 Nexo hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in the U.S. and Canada to park them outdoors and away from buildings because of the risk of fuel leaks and possible fires.

The Korean automaker is recalling hydrogen-powered SUVs from model years 2019 to 2024.

Hyundai says in documents released Thursday by U.S. safety regulators that a pressure relief device can break and cause a hydrogen leak. This could lead to a fire even if the SUVs are parked.

According to the company, the SUVs can still be driven but should be parked outside until repairs are made.

Hyundai says there are no reports of fires or injuries in the United States or Canada. Messages were left Thursday asking if there had been fires in other countries.

Owners will be notified by letter starting December 10th. Dealers will replace the pressure relief devices.

The automaker said in a statement that it was conducting the recall “to ensure the safety of its customers.”
