FBI is investigating the death of Dennoriss Richardson

LAUDERDALE CO., Ala. (WAFF) – The FBI has agreed to open an investigation into the death of a black man who was found dead hanging in the carport of an abandoned building, according to Lauderdale County authorities.

Dennoriss Richardson’s death was ruled a suicide by Colbert County investigators and the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. However, Lauderdale County Sheriff Eric Balentine called on the FBI to conduct an independent investigation to ensure transparency.

He didn’t know how long the case would take.

According to our news partner Times Daily, Richardson sued Sheffield Police in February 2024.

The lawsuit alleged that officers violated Richardson’s constitutional rights by using excessive force.

The lawsuit alleges that police tied him to a chair for more than three hours, sprayed his cell with mace and punched him in the throat.
