Weather in Calgary: Incoming atmospheric river triggers weather warnings in British Columbia, including for Rogers Pass

A moisture-laden system in the upper atmosphere is moving toward the Pacific coast and is expected to produce large amounts of precipitation.

In light of this atmospheric river, special weather statements have been issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada indicating that 50 to 80 millimeters of rain is possible along the Trans-Canada Highway around Rogers Pass.

The special weather advisory warns of rain starting Friday afternoon and lasting through the weekend.

As always, the type of precipitation is determined by atmospheric temperature. So as cooler air moves in from the north, heavy, wet snow is likely to fall in higher elevations.

The arrival of this system will be preceded by strong winds and windy conditions will continue throughout the weekend. The combination of wind and snow will initially lead to a deterioration in visibility – especially on Friday and Saturday nights.

In Calgary, daily highs will remain near seasonal on Thursday and Friday before peaking on Saturday.

Sunday begins with warmer weather before a significant drop in conditions and temperatures.

The first snowfall of the season is likely on Monday with a daytime high near freezing.
