Shooting on Yarborough Road | The murder suspect was identified the day after the fatal double shooting in Cumberland County but is still at large

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) — A murder suspect wanted in connection with a shooting that left two younger men dead Tuesday has been killed in Surry County.

District Attorney Billy West said Mount Airy police shot and killed Desmund Louis Moore, 42, Wednesday evening. According to the city of Mount Airy, Moore was found in the Flatrock area following a pursuit by city and county officers.

Mount Airy police said K-9 Officer Draco was also shot while attempting to apprehend the suspect.

Moore was wanted in connection with a shooting that occurred outside a home in the 3600 block of Yarborough Road, a Fayetteville address near Hope Mills.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said the 911 call came in a few minutes after 11 a.m

Officers discovered that two men had been shot. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have now identified these men as Arthur Knight Acosta, 21, and Jefferson Taylor Duggins, 32.

The 911 caller told dispatchers that these two men were to accompany him to pressure wash a home in the area.

He said he heard gunshots while waiting inside with the homeowner but thought nothing of it. After calling his workers several times because they were late, the man tracked their work truck’s GPS to the gate of the house.

When he later walked up to the gate, the man told dispatchers he was horrified by what he saw.

“My window in the truck was shot out and they’re lying there. “I need an ambulance and I need the sheriff to come as soon as possible,” the caller said.

It remains unclear what led to the shooting. However, deputies said the shooting was not random and there was no immediate threat to the rest of the county.

Deputies have not said whether or how Moore knew the victims.

Some people asked why Cumberland County Schools in the area were not placed on lockdown, to which CCS responded in a statement that said, in part:

“After consultation with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), it was determined that the situation on Yarborough Road does not warrant a full closure. However, we have raised awareness at schools in the area to ensure continued safety and vigilance.”

NC Window Cleaning, the company that employed the two pressure washers killed, released a statement on Facebook asking people to donate to their families’ respective GoFundMe:

“Tay (Duggins) was with NC Window Cleaning for six years. He leaves behind a wife and five children. Tay was my right hand man and such a great person. Everywhere he went he seemed to meet a friend.

Arthur (Acosta) worked at NC Window Cleaning for three years. He leaves behind his mother, father and three sisters. Arthur was a bright light in this world and had a whole life ahead of him that was stolen. Such a well-mannered young man who we will truly miss.
