Here’s a recent Mets story from The Associated Press:

NEW YORK (AP) — On a night of failed comebacks, the New York Mets need another comeback.

Luis Severino missed grounders twice, leading to two unearned runs in the second inning. And after the Mets loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half, Francisco Alvarez and Francisco Lindor both struck out Walker Buehler.

Los Angeles was simmering and New York lost 8-0 on Wednesday, giving the Dodgers a 2-1 lead in the NL Championship Series.

“We got beat 9-0 in the first game, then we came back and won Game 2. I don’t see why we can’t come back and do it tomorrow,” said Mets reliever Reed Garrett, who scored Kiké Hernández’s two-run shot , home run in the sixth inning that made it 4-0.

Severino singled Max Muncy to lead off the second inning with the first of seven walks by Mets pitchers, and Teoscar Hernández hit a tapper in front of the plate. Alvarez tried for the leader, but his throw hit Muncy and Alvarez was charged with an error.

“Maybe I tried to do a little too much there,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said.

Gavin Lux hit a one-hopper to Severino, a Gold Glove finalist, that could have easily been turned into a double play, but the ball bounced off the pitcher’s glove and Severino’s only chance when he caught it was to throwing him out for one for the first time.

Will Smith extended his swing to nine throws and followed with another one-hopper. This deflected off Severino’s glove and rolled toward the shortstop for an infield hit as Muncy scored the game’s first run. Three throws later, Tommy Edman’s sacrifice fly made it a 2-0 lead.

“I feel like my glove messed everything up that inning,” Severino said. “I should have caught them. First, it should have been an easy doubleheader. The other one I should have stopped the guy from going to home plate.”

Jose Iglesias’ single between walks against JD Martinez and Tyrone Taylor loaded the bases in the bottom half. Alvarez, who was 1 for 21 with the bases loaded in the regular season in his career, took a 2-2 fastball to the outside corner for what was called third strike.

That produced Lindor, a .336 hitter with over 10 big league seasons of bases loaded. His slam against Philadelphia’s Carlos Estévez in the fourth-inning game-winner of the Division Series erased a one-run deficit in the sixth inning. This time, Lindor swung over a full-count knuckle curve.

“He does a really good job of tunneling,” Lindor said. “It comes from the same place as the fastball and then falls.”

Buehler got off the mound screaming and slammed his bare hand into his glove. The 30-year-old right-hander returned to the major leagues in May after Tommy John surgery and is a different pitcher than he was when he became a two-time All-Star.

“In 2018, 2019, 2020 I would have thrown a fastball,” he said.

Shohei Ohtani provided the most memorable moment of the night with a three-run home run in the eighth off Tylor Megill that flew over the foul pole in right field. Citi Field was less than half full in the ninth inning as many of the sellout crowd of 43,883 grew tired of their frustration.

New York was blanked in both losses, scoring seven times and striking out 20 times. The Mets’ NLCS batting average has dropped to 179, with Lindor and Pete Alonso each going 1-for-11, Brandon Nimmo 1-for-10 and Alvarez 1-for-9.

Mets pitchers walked 22.

“They won’t be chasing as much,” Mendoza said. “Not only do we have to move forward, but we also have to continue to stay on offense and make shots. If we fall behind in the count, they will make us pay.”

After starting the season 0-5 and falling to 22-33 when the Dodgers won a three-game series at Citi Field in May, the Mets are confident they can rebound.

“You need to wash this away as quickly as possible,” Lindor said.
