Doubts are being raised about the mental capacity of the accused murderer of the beloved Bishop of Los Angeles

Doubts were raised Thursday about the mental capacity of the man accused of shooting Los Angeles Catholic Auxiliary Bishop David O’Connell at his Hacienda Heights home last year.

Criminal proceedings in the case against Carlos Medina were suspended after one of his lawyers raised concerns about his client’s mental capacity on the day of a scheduled hearing to determine whether there was enough evidence to take the case to trial.

“The defense team has worked diligently to thoroughly investigate the events that occurred, including all contributing factors such as: B. Mr. Medina’s mental health, to ensure a full and fair presentation of the facts,” Assistant Public Defenders Pedro Cortes and Jessica Arteaga said in a statement released after the hearing. “Based on the information we provided, the court expressed doubts about his fitness to stand trial. Mr. Medina’s case will be referred to Mental Health Court where his mental health issues can be addressed.”
