After a brief radio silence in 2023, Google is testing the entry-level version of the premium subscription in selected countries, including Germany, Austria and Thailand. The tariff for 5.99 instead of 13.99 euros offers a cost-effective alternative to the regular YouTube Premium, but with some restrictions.

YouTube Premium Lite focuses on reducing ads without offering the full ad-freedom of the regular Premium subscription. Users can enjoy videos without pre-roll or mid-roll video ads, but banner ads remain.

In contrast to the full premium offer, which includes functions such as offline downloads, background playback and the music streaming service YouTube Music, the Lite version does without these features.

For users who are bothered by the ever-increasing number of ads on YouTube, Premium Lite offers a cost-effective way to reduce ad interference. Premium Lite is an attractive option, especially for those who have no need for YouTube Music or the other premium features. You just have to get used to having to endure advertising despite paying – it works with the major streaming services like Netflix and Disney+ it’s apparently quite good.
