These are the top 15 things to do in Houston this weekend

There’s a lot of good music playing this weekend, from the electronic rock of Courting to the celebratory jazz of Camille Thurman and Darrell Green to the sexy soul of Maxwell and the crazy alt-country of Houston’s Lyle Lovett. And if you want it in musical form, there is also a double recording of Rock horror.

There will also be a Japanese Sake and Food Festival in the next few days; a very gymnastic show with hometown girl Simone Biles; an Energy Day celebration for the children; and a Day of the Dead celebration for those who can’t wait until next month to celebrate Dia de los Muertos.

Thursday, October 17th

HEB Wine Walk on Market Street
At the 20th Annual HEB Wine Walk on Market Street, foodies, wine lovers and fans of Wine & Food Week can sip and stroll down Market Street while supporting worthwhile charities such as New Danville, The Woodlands Waterway Arts Council and the Montgomery County Food Bank. The event spans three blocks of Market Street and is packed with a plethora of culinary creations, wine presentations with industry experts, craft beers, live music and wine experiences. 6 p.m.

Courting and Vundabar in concert
It looks like another Liverpool foursome is coming to America and is ready to make a big splash. This will be electro-rock band Courting’s first-ever U.S. tour, as they open for Boston indie rockers Vundabar. Named a “Band to Watch” by Stereogum, their latest album New last name received critical acclaim from NME, pasteand more. The record brings out the guitar-pop element of the band’s sound even more, taking them into a world also occupied by bands like Sports Team, English Teacher, FEET, etc. 7 p.m.

Live at the Founders Club: We celebrate Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln with Camille Thurman and Darrell Green
Camille Thurman has established herself not only as one of today’s most important saxophonists, but also as one of our most talented singers. Drummer Darryl Green has been called upon to perform with today’s most famous musicians for years. Together they celebrate jazz drummer Max Roach and singer/actress Abbey Lincoln with an evening of soulful sounds that highlights both Roach’s centennial and the music he and Lincoln (his wife) made together. 7:30 p.m.

Rice University’s Moody Center For The Arts hosts the Monuments Symposium with Paul M. Farber
Rice University’s Moody Center For The Arts will address the history and future of monuments at this special symposium. Speakers include Paul Farber, director of the Monument Lab; art historian Kirk Savage, University of Pittsburgh; Houston-based artists Jamal Cyrus and Tiffany Chung; and Rice members of the Task Force on Slavery, Segregation and Racial Injustice W. Caleb McDaniel, Alexander Byrd and Fabiola Lopez-Duran. Lunch is included with registration. 9 a.m.

Art Factory presents The Rocky Horror Show
If you are a fan of The Rocky Horror Picture Showthe River Oaks Theater will finally have a midnight showing with burlesque revue The Sisterhood of Lil St Cyr overseeing the madness. But if you remember when the show started out as a real stage musical, Art Factory is going to make a fabulously wacky production. Costumes and engagement are encouraged, making this production a fully immersive and highly dynamic evening of crazy, sexy fun. Intended for an adult audience only. Until Thursday, October 31st, 8 p.m.

Lyle Lovett in concert
We’ve been in a relationship with Houston-born Lyle Lovett for a long time. Long before the wedding to Julia Roberts. Long before he became a repertory actor in Robert Altmen films. We’ve loved his silly pompadour and quirky country-blues styles ever since We saw him play “Here I Am” on Carson. (There is another live version in which he performed the song with comedian Steven Wright, but it has been removed from YouTube.) He will perform with his large band as part of The Woodlands’ free 50th anniversary concert. They are joined by Hayes Carll. 7:30 p.m.

Maxwell in concert
Neo-soulster Maxwell finally comes out of hiding and tours the country as part of the Serenade Tour. Even though he hasn’t released a new album since then blackSUMMERS’night In 2016, he is ready to perform gentle R&B ditties for all the fans who have followed him since his debut in 1996 Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suiteas well as the adult children who most likely created these fans while listening to his music. He is joined by Jazmine Sullivan and October London. 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, October 19th

The Roasted Coconut 5th Anniversary Celebration
Montrose restaurant The Toasted Coconut turns five this weekend, and the place will be celebrating with a wild and strange celebration all day long. First, specialty drinks will be served that will enchant you. Then they roast a pig. Other details include a mechanical shark, face paint, a dunk tank (chef Martin Stayer will be in it!), snow cones and a live DJ. ⁠And don’t forget the limited-edition, spooky ceramics made by local talent Lorita Makes. 10 O `clock.

Houston Energy Day Festival
Energy Day is like a giant science fair and festival and is designed to show children how fun and exciting STEM can be. Visitors can explore, create and discover new things while playing outdoors. They also get to meet lots of other kids who love science and technology as much as they do. The event will be full of experiments, hands-on activities and exhibitions where children can discover and experience the energy that powers the world around us. 11 a.m.

Monster Jam
Monster Jam will be an adrenaline-pumping weekend of heated rivalries, high-flying stunts and fierce head-to-head battles. There will be the Texas debut of four new Marvel Monster Jam trucks: The Amazing Spider-Man, Iron Man, Black Panther and Thor will face off against fan favorites like the iconic Grave Digger for the first time. We’ll also see the Houston premiere of the all-new Sparkle Smash and more in freestyle, skills and racing competitions. 7 p.m.

Athleta presents Gold Over America Tour
Gold Over America Tour is a spectacle in the style of a pop concert It chronicles the athletic brilliance and championship journeys of Spring native and resident gymnast Simone Biles and cast members Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles, Katelyn Ohashi, Peng-Peng Lee, Shilese Jones, Fred Richard, Mélanie Johanna De Jesus Dos Santos, Kayla Dicello, Brody Malone, Paul Judah and more. The event features gravity-defying falls, spins and tricks. 7:30 p.m. Go behind the scenes of the show with one of the cast members of this story.

Sunday, October 20th

The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston presents “Grounded in Clay: The Spirit of Pueblo Pottery” on opening day.
Grounded in Clay: The Spirit of Pueblo Pottery foregrounds Puebloan voices and aesthetics and offers a visionary understanding of Pueblo pots as vessels of community-based knowledge and personal experience. The exhibition is the first locally curated exhibition at the museum and features more than 100 historical, modern and contemporary clay items. Until Sunday, January 12th, 12:30 p.m.

Japanese sake and food festival
The Japanese Sake & Food Festival, first launched in Tokyo in 2015, will make its way to America for the first time, offering an opportunity to explore the combination of Japanese sake and culinary delights. The festival will feature over 30 exhibitors including sake brewers, traders and local food vendors offering various products from sake to shochu and local cuisine. Other highlights include a sake seminar with special guests, Japanese stage performances, a Japanese activity and photography area and much more. 2 p.m. (Saturday lunchtime).

The Intempo Dance Ensemble presents the Day of the Dead celebration
The Intempo Dance Ensemble presents an evening of dance and music inspired by the whimsical world of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). The event is a Mexican celebration of pre-Hispanic origins honoring those who have died on Saturday, November 2nd. The celebrations begin on Friday, November 1st and coincide with the Catholic celebrations of All Souls’ Day and All Saints’ Day. In Mexico, it is a celebration of life where one remembers the loved ones who came before us and dedicates an altar once a year to welcome them on their visit to the world of the living. 6 p.m.

Korn in concert
Considered one of the pioneers of alt-metal — the radio-friendly genre whose members include Limp Bizkit and POD — the band is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a 25-city tour that stops in The Woodlands on Sunday. Known for hits like “Got the Life (Follow the Leader)” and “Falling Away From Me,” expect a high-energy show that will make attendees feel like they’ve been transported back to 1994. Gojira and Spiritbox open. 6:30 p.m.
