India are aiming for a record fourth title in Malaysia.

The Sultan of Johor Cup 2024 begins on October 19, with the final scheduled for October 26. Six teams are taking part in the latest edition of the annual U-21 men’s hockey tournament. Team India is led by Amir Ali and the boys are aiming for a record fourth title in the competition. Malaysia Hockey Confederation president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal said the Sultan of Johor Cup was the best platform for the national team to prepare for the Asian Junior Cup in November in Oman. “It is also our team’s qualification for the Junior World Championships which will be held in India next year.”

Tournament history

Since its inception in 2011, Malaysia has hosted the Sultan of Johor Cup, an international U-21 competition, annually. In total, five countries have won the tournament, with Great Britain and India jointly winning the highest number of titles (3) to date. The other nations to win the Sultan of Johor Cup title are Australia (2), Germany (2) and hosts Malaysia (1).

The host country won the first edition by beating Australia 3-2, while Germany won the second edition by beating India 3-2 in the final. Since then, India has been a strong opponent and has won the tournament three times (2013, 2014, 2022). Unfortunately, the 2020 and 2021 seasons were canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. India also has the most finals appearances (7), followed by Great Britain and Australia (5).

In the last edition, India finished third after defeating Pakistan in a thrilling play-off. They lost in the semi-finals against eventual champions Germany (3:6). Germany beat Australia on penalties after a goalless draw to win their second title and first since 2012.

The Sultan of Johor Cup 2024 will take place from October 19 to 26. The games will be played at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

How many teams will take part in the Sultan of Johor Cup 2024?

A total of six teams will take part in the 12th edition of the Sultan of Johor Cup. These six teams are India, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Australia and Great Britain.

Teams compete in a round-robin format. The top two ranked teams then advance to the final, while the teams placed third and fourth play for bronze, while an additional classification match is played between the teams placed fifth and sixth.
