Mass fish deaths at Lake Athalassa are being investigated

Authorities are investigating the cause of a mass fish kill at Lake Athalassa, where dead fish were found floating above the water.

Forestry ministry official Loizos Constantinou said a similar incident occurred on a larger scale three years ago and was likely caused by a potentially toxic cyanobacterium.

Samples of dead fish were collected for histological analysis, while water samples were sent for biological and chemical testing.

The relevant authorities, including the veterinary department, the water development department, the fisheries department, the state general chemical laboratory and the environment department, have all been informed.

Efforts to remove the dead fish are ongoing as officials monitor the situation throughout the weekend.

Test results are expected next week and should clarify the cause of the fish kill. The forest department will continue monitoring the lake and surrounding areas in the coming days.
