I see the responsibility to fly the flag for weirdos across the country, there’s no hiding behind it: Nathan Lyon

I see the responsibility to fly the flag for weirdos across the country, there’s no hiding behind it: Nathan Lyon

Legendary Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon recently revealed he wants to keep spin bowling cool for the next generation as Lyon approaches a milestone that could see him join the late Shane Warne Australia The two best wicket-takers in history.

The sudden loss of Warne in 2022 left a void in the cricket world, particularly in spin bowling. Warne had not only revived the art in the 1990s but also inspired several bowlers to follow in his footsteps. Now Lyon is at the forefront of continuing that legacy.

“I see the responsibility to raise the flag for the weirdos across the country, there is no hiding behind it. Especially after Warnie’s death, I feel like it’s a big role for me to make sure the spin stays cool. I do.” “Not cool in any way, but if I can try to promote spin bowling and show how great it is to be a spin bowler… that’s pretty cool,” Lyon said, according to ESPNcricinfo.

Tanveer Sangha is a top-class legspinner: Nathan Lyon

The 36-year-old veteran’s career shows no signs of slowing down. With 530 Test wickets to his name, he is just 33 away from Glenn McGrath’s tally of 563. The upcoming Test series against India and Sri Lanka is an opportunity for Lyon to etch his name even deeper into Australian cricket history.

Lyon played 100 consecutive Tests before suffering a calf injury in the Ashes series last year. This consistency has been a key to Australia’s recent successes. Lyon credits a conversation with his father with helping him understand the broader implications of his role.

“Just having this conversation and understanding that in many ways we are role models for so many different people around the world. And if we can do our small part to hopefully make people better cricketers or people, then we’re doing our job,” he added.

He also expressed his admiration for young talents like Todd Murphy and Tanveer Sangha, with Lyon describing the latter as a superstar of the game who is currently developing.

“What he can offer for New South Wales and Australia in the future will be nothing short of amazing. I’m a big fan of the way he plays, he’s a top-class legspinner and he’s very confident in his abilities. “He’s going to be a superstar of the game and I’m trying to help him get better and he’s helping me also, to get better,” Lyon concluded.
