Storms cut off power for thousands of people in southwest Virginia

ROANOKE, Virginia. – Saturday’s storms disrupted power to thousands of Appalachian Power customers in our region.

At the peak of the outages, more than 2,500 customers were without power in Roanoke County and another 1,250 customers in the city of Roanoke.

Most outages occurred north of Hershberger Road NW and west of Interstate 581, according to APCO’s outage map. Restoration was expected by 12:30 a.m.

More than 300 customers in Alleghany and Craig counties were without power as of 10 p.m., according to the Craig-Botetourt Electric Cooperative outage map.

Weather also caused delays in Saturday’s game between Liberty University and Campbell University in Lynchburg. Referees stopped play and cleared the stands during the 2nd quarter. Play later resumed after the weather cleared through the area.

There were also isolated reports of fallen trees in Craig and Roanoke counties, according to the National Weather Service.
