Israeli airstrikes on military installations in central Syria have left at least 14 people dead, according to Syrian state media reports. The Syrian state news agency Sana said 43 people were also injured in the attacks, which took place on Sunday evening in the Masyaf region of Hama province.

Details of the attacks

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based monitoring group, reported that the attacks targeted military and academic facilities linked to Iran-backed armed groups. The group noted that at least four soldiers and three civilians were killed in the attacks. The facilities attacked were reportedly involved in weapons development and hosted pro-Iranian groups.

The Syrian military reported that the attacks were carried out by Israeli aircraft over northwestern Lebanon. Rockets were fired at several military sites at around 11:20 p.m. local time (20:20 GMT). According to the Syrian military, its air defense systems intercepted some of the rockets, but the attacks caused significant damage, including to a local highway, and led to a fire in the Hair Abbas area.

Israeli military response

The Israeli military has not commented on the details of this latest attack, sticking to its usual policy of not discussing foreign media reports. However, Israel has previously acknowledged carrying out numerous attacks in Syria on facilities linked to Iran and allied armed groups. The frequency of these attacks has reportedly increased since the outbreak of the Gaza conflict in October last year, in response to cross-border attacks by Hezbollah and other groups into northern Israel.

The Syrian Observatory reported “13 violent explosions” in the region, underlining the intensity of the attacks on the scientific research centers in Masyaf.
