Manchester United travel to Southampton this weekend desperately needing a positive result after a rocky start to the new Premier League season.

Erik ten Hag’s side have suffered back-to-back defeats against Brighton and Liverpool, putting the Dutchman under pressure at this early stage of the season. Even their opening day win against Fulham at Old Trafford was narrow, with Joshua Zirkzee coming on as a substitute that night to help.

Manuel Ugarte was not registered in time for his appearance against Liverpool before the international break, but United fans cannot wait to see the 23-year-old back in the team after Casemiro had a tough day in the last game against their arch-rivals.

With very little pre-season experience, ten Hag said Ugarte “needs to work on his fitness”. He also decided to introduce Zirkzee and Matthijs de Ligt into the team gradually, with them both starting on the bench for the first two games of the season.

Ugarte played 79 valuable minutes for Uruguay on Saturday and is expected to play in Tuesday evening’s match against Venezuela.

But the long journey back to Manchester in time for the early kick-off on Saturday could mean a place on the bench for him.

Injury problems have posed another problem for ten Hag, as Rasmus Hojlund, Luke Shaw and Leny Yoro are still set to play this season.

While the latter is not expected to return until November, Hojlund is close to returning after returning to training at Carrington before the international break. The Dane sustained a thigh injury in a pre-season match against Arsenal.

Shaw was sidelined with a calf injury, but a club statement in August indicated that he would be available again after the international break in September.

Ten Hag is expected to provide an update on the pair at his pre-match press conference on Thursday.

Man Utd's expected starting line-up against Southampton

This is how United could line up this weekend.

Victor Lindelof is another player who will be available after training during the international break. Tyrell Malacia was included in United’s Europa League squad last week but is still working on his return, having not played for the club since May 2023.

Mason Mount, meanwhile, suffered another injury setback a week ago and is unlikely to be available for the trip to the south coast this weekend.
