In this important industrial sector, the focus is on improving income. A difficult round of wage negotiations is expected.

Weimar (dpa/th) – Collective bargaining negotiations for employees in the Thuringian metal industry are starting. IG Metall and employers are meeting for the first time today in Weimar (9:30 a.m.), as both negotiating parties announced.

The union demanded a salary increase of seven percent over a period of twelve months. The training allowances for young professionals are to increase disproportionately by 170 euros per month. In addition, a social component for low-income workers and more time sovereignty for employees are to be implemented.

IG Metall expects a “conflict-ridden dispute in Thuringia”. The Association of the Metal and Electrical Industries considers the demand to be unrealistic in view of the economic weakness and structural change, especially in the automotive industry.

Negotiations are taking place for around 20,000 employees in companies bound by collective agreements. However, many other employers base their company collective agreements on the agreement. In total, it is estimated that around 80,000 people work in the Thuringian metal industry.

According to IG Metall, employees want to support the demands with an action in front of the negotiation venue.
