True crime series: Third season of “Monster”: Charlie Hunnam plays murderer Ed Gein

The third season of the “Monster” true crime series is announced, even though the second has not yet been released: “Sons of Anarchy” star Charlie Hunnam becomes one of the scariest characters in US crime history.

From September 19th, the second installment of the true crime series “Monster” will be making its way to Netflix after “Dahmer”. Even before the new episodes, which revolve around the spectacular murder case involving the Menéndez brothers, are broadcast, news about season three is already emerging – and it’s quite something. According to a report by the US industry website “Deadline”, “Sons of Anarchy” star Charlie Hunnam (44) will play the next “Monster”.

Ryan Murphy (58), the initiator of the dark anthology, surprisingly announced this casting announcement at the premiere of the second season. Murphy also revealed Hunnam’s role: The actor will play Edward “Ed” Gein, one of the worst serial killers in US history.

Inspiration for numerous Hollywood psychopaths

In the 1950s, he terrorized the town of Plainfield in Wisconsin, USA. His atrocities earned him the disturbing nickname “Plainfield Ghoul”. In addition to several grave desecrations, he was convicted of two proven murders in 1968. Due to his mental state, he was not imprisoned but placed in a psychiatric institution, where he died of cancer in 1984.

Gein’s crimes became famous because of their unbelievable brutality. The murderer served as a model for numerous Hollywood villains: Author Robert Bloch (1917-1994) drew inspiration from Gein’s pathological relationship with his mother for his novel “Psycho”, which Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980) later made into a film. Thomas Harris (83) drew parallels to Gein’s crimes with the character Jame “Buffalo Bill” Gumb in his bestseller “The Silence of the Lambs”. The producers of the 1970s horror film “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” were also inspired by him. In short: The third season of “Monster” could also be the most disturbing.

Jeffrey Dahmer opened the series

And that would be quite telling given the presentation of the series. The first season is about the murders of Jeffrey Dahmer. Although “Dahmer” with Evan Peters (37) enjoyed great critical popularity on Netflix, the portrayal of the murderer sparked controversy and was criticized not only by the relatives of the actual Dahmer victims.

The second season, which started on September 19, deals with the married couple José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menéndez, played by Oscar winner Javier Bardem (55), and Chloë Sevigny (49), who were murdered in 1989. Soon after the crime, the two sons, Lyle and Erik Menéndez, became the focus of the investigation and were later charged and convicted of double murder.
