This is what the Linz candidates stand for in the 2024 National Council election

LINZ. For the focus on the 2024 National Council elections, Tips asked the regional top candidates from Linz in the Linz and surrounding area regional constituency for their views, positions and goals in the region on various topics. What are the candidates’ stance on migration?

Klaus Fürlinger for the ÖVP, Roland Baumann for the SPÖ, Michael Schilchegger for the FPÖ, Bernhard Seeber for the Greens, Georg Redlhammer for the NEOS, Christina Pree for the KPÖ, Gerhard Pötscher for the LMP and Eva Steinmayr for KEINE answered Tips’ questions on the subject of migration.

Klaus Fürlinger, ÖVP, constituency list position 1

Over 90 percent of immigrants do not come to Europe as refugees, but in the hope of a better life. It is impossible to provide for everyone who has never paid into our social systems. Migrants who commit crimes must be consistently returned to their countries of origin.

Roland Baumann, SPÖ, constituency list position 1

At the same time, we are combating the biggest cause of refugee movements. People seeking protection in Austria need to be able to apply for asylum and integrate into the labor market more quickly. To achieve this, foreign qualifications must be better recognized and German courses must be offered and required.

Michael Schilchegger, FPÖ, constituency list position 1

Mass migration is overwhelming everyone (schools, doctors, housing market, police, taxpayers). Therefore: Don’t just control borders, but turn them away; Don’t just revoke residence permits, but deport them. Many EU states are already showing that it can be done.

Bernhard Seeber, GREENS, constituency list position 3

Isolation is absurd. Immigration is necessary for nursing and catering, for example. Because of the shortage of skilled workers, we need people who want to work here. Integration is not a one-way street and requires measures and the willingness of everyone.

Georg Redlhammer, NEOS, constituency list position 3

NEOS stands for an orderly migration policy with European solutions and promotes integration through education and work. Anyone who gets involved and shares our values will find a new home in Linz. Human rights and tolerance are our foundation.

Christina Pree, KPÖ, constituency list position 1

Instead of well-thought-out concepts for integration, there are only hurdles in many places. An ever-increasing proportion of the population in Austria is not allowed to vote. I am committed to the right to vote for everyone who has lived in Austria for more than a year.

Gerhard Pötscher, LMP, constituency list position 2

There has been a complete failure in migration and integration policy in recent years. One side has looked away, the other has polemicized. We want to tackle the problems seriously and objectively, with reason, a sense of reality and humanity.

Eva Steinmayr, NONE, constituency list position 2

Apply for asylum before entering the country online, via EU embassy and border asylum procedures. Distribute asylum seekers fairly throughout the EU. Provide education in line with an open, progressive society from day one against anti-democratic cultural and religious practices.
