Government to set up medical colleges in all districts and focus on filling vacant doctor posts: Chief Minister of Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Odisha State Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced on Wednesday that his government is committed to setting up a medical college in each of the 30 districts and filling vacant doctor posts on a priority basis.

As reported by news agency PTI, Majhi, speaking at the annual conference of the Odisha Medical Service Association (OMSA) in Balasore, urged doctors to work with dedication and maintain public confidence in the medical profession.

He criticised the previous BJD government for its neglect of the health sector and noted that out of the 15,774 sanctioned posts of doctors, 5,765 were lying vacant for a long time. He stressed that during this period only 443 doctors were appointed on an ad hoc and contractual basis.

“Our government’s priority is to promptly fill all vacancies and improve healthcare in the state. Nurses also play a crucial role in patient care,” he explained.

Majhi announced that the Health Ministry’s budget has been increased by 32 percent for the fiscal year 2024-25. “We are committed to providing quality healthcare to all. We are ready to implement the Ayushman Bharat scheme, which has been denied to the people of Odisha due to political reasons,” he added.

He accused the former BJD government of not implementing the Ayushman Bharat programme because it feared that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would take credit for it.

Addressing the OMSA’s demands, Majhi assured that the issues of incentives and accommodation of doctors would be resolved soon. He also promised to create a safe working environment for medical professionals.
