Collecting and avoiding garbage – Eichholz in Sindelfingen shows how it’s done.

Twice a year, in March and September, around 100 people meet in Eichholz to clean together. The mix is diverse: from toddlers to senior citizens, from cigarette butts to closet walls.

The two district managers, Marion Conzelmann and Timea Schneider, invited everyone to Eichholz for a “clean-up” on Saturday, September 21. Children of all ages, volunteers from the district work, residents of Eichholz, a group of geocachers and other helping hands were there.

After the garbage had been dumped at the island meeting point and another collection point, everyone was invited to eat together. Care was taken not to create more garbage straight away. The even better alternative to collecting garbage is not to create garbage in the first place. The island meeting point also served hot dogs to go and cold and warm drinks in porcelain cups and plastic mugs.

One focus of the neighborhood work in Eichholz is sustainability. In addition to the two clean-ups, there is a summer festival and a Christmas market, where reusable tableware is used. A fully equipped kitchen is available for rent so that waste can be proactively avoided. There is a book exchange cabinet and a gift bench in the house. In the senior citizens’ kitchen, take-away food is distributed in plastic containers. And once a week, garbage sponsors meet and clean up in Eichholz.

If many people help to avoid waste, the environment will stay cleaner. Join in!
