Indianapolis man sentenced to 60 years in prison for fatal shooting in 2022

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – An Indianapolis man has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for his role in the shooting death of his cousin in 2022.

Marion County prosecutors announced Wednesday that Emmanuel Newman was sentenced to 60 years in prison for his role in the shooting death of his cousin, Joshua Hopson. In August, Newman was convicted of murder after a three-day jury trial.

In the early morning hours of December 28, 2022, officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 3400 block of Alsuda Court, in the northeast part of the city. Officers arrived and found Hopson lying outside the building with multiple gunshot wounds.

According to Hopson’s girlfriend, he had an argument with Newman before the shooting. She said Newman left but returned a short time later. Hopson then went outside and as she followed him, she heard several gunshots and Hopson fell to the ground. Newman then ran from the scene.

Investigators reviewed surveillance footage from the apartment complex and a private camera. They observed Newman carrying a rifle and approaching Hopson as he exited the house. The footage then shows Newman firing several shots at Hopson. He then steps over him and fires more shots directly at him before fleeing in his vehicle.

On January 5, 2023, IMPD detectives arrested Newman and brought him to the Homicide Unit.

“Gun violence among family members is on the rise,” said Marion County District Attorney Mears. “This verdict shows how committed we are to holding accountable those who use senseless violence to resolve a conflict. Our thoughts are with the family as they move on from this unfathomable tragedy.”
