New York Mayor Eric Adams charged after election campaign corruption investigation

New York Mayor Eric Adams charged after election campaign corruption investigation

A grand jury in Manhattan has indicted New York Mayor Eric Adams on federal charges, multiple sources familiar with Fox News confirmed. The details of the indictment remain under wraps.

Multiple sources have confirmed to Fox News that the indictment could be released as early as tomorrow.

The FBI and the Justice Department declined to comment on the matter, and it is unclear who Adams has hired as his personal attorney.

“I always knew that if I stood up for New Yorkers, I would be a target – and I was,” Adams said in a statement obtained by The Associated Press. “If I am charged, I am innocent and I will fight it with all my strength and determination.”

Several people in the vicinity of the 63-year-old former NYPD captain have already been searched.

In February, FBI agents raided the Bronx home of Winnie Greco, one of his top aides. In November, agents raided the residence of another aide, Cenk Ocal, a former Turkish Airlines executive who joined the mayor’s transition team. That same month, they visited Brianna Suggs, the mayor’s top fundraiser.

According to the New York Times, in May, Rana Abbasova, another close aide to the mayor, reportedly turned against the mayor after his dealings with Turkish Airlines came under scrutiny.

New York State lawmakers agree in their statements that this step is the best course of action for the city going forward.

“The mayor and his administration appear to be riddled with corruption, and the public has lost all faith in their ability to move the five boroughs forward. Mr. Adams should do what is best for this city and resign so that new elections can be held. His situation is untenable,” said Gerard Kassar, chairman of the Conservative Party of New York State.

“Another New York Democrat embroiled in scandal. Time and time again they have proven that they are only interested in their personal power and scoring political points, not the well-being of New York taxpayers. It’s time for people to send a message that they will not put up with this anymore,” said New York Congressman Nick Langworthy.

“We can add another name to the list of high-ranking Democrats in Albany and New York City who have been tainted by scandal, including Governors Andrew Cuomo and Eliot Spitzer, both of whom resigned in disgrace,” said Ed Cox, chairman of the New York Republican Party. “Democratic one-party rule in New York City and New York State does not serve the interests of our citizens, who continue to flee New York for states with lower taxes, more freedom and less corruption. It is very likely that Mayor Adams will have to resign following the revelation of the specific charges against him.”

The FBI is reportedly investigating whether Adams worked with the Turkish government and others to raise money as part of his 2021 mayoral campaign.
