New edition of the 3-in-1 charging station with Qi2 tried out

It wasn’t that long ago that I reviewed the elegant 3-in-1 charging station with MagSafe, the NOMAD Stand One Max, for the blog, which is made of very high-quality materials. At the time, one thing in particular stood out: if you used the iPhone on the magnetic MagSafe charging surface in landscape format in standby mode, you couldn’t charge the Apple Watch at the same time using the nearby charging puck.

With the new edition of the NOMAD Stand One Max, the US manufacturer now wants to eliminate this problem and, in addition to a slightly modified design, is also using the relatively new Qi2 charging standard for iPhone charging for the first time: The new Stand One Max can charge an iPhone with up to 15 watts using the magnetic Qi2 charging pad. The AirPods are charged with up to 5 watts, and the charging station also supports the quick charge function from the Apple Watch 7th generation onwards, so that it can also be charged with up to 5 watts. I have now received a test copy of the NOMAD Stand One Max in the white and silver color variant and can share my first impressions with you.

Compared to the previous Stand One Max charging station, which still used Apple-certified MagSafe to charge iPhones and the Apple Watch, the new release not only uses Qi2 as the charging standard, but also has a slightly modified design, which primarily affects the charging puck for the Apple Watch. In the previous version, this was connected to the charging plate for the iPhone at a fixed angle and thus prevented the iPhone from being in landscape standby mode when the iPhone and Apple Watch were being charged at the same time. This design faux pas has now been remedied. The Apple Watch charging puck is now firmly mounted on the base plate next to the iPhone holder, so that the iPhone does not come into contact with the Apple Watch in landscape mode. In addition, the watch display can also be used to show the time at night.

Great product presentation and separate USB-C charging cable

As with the previous model of the Stand One Max, the charging station comes in elegant packaging, where the charger with its heavy base stands on a small platform and the lid of the box can be removed upwards to reveal the accessories. I personally really like this aesthetic product presentation by the manufacturer: It makes the charging station look very classy. The scope of delivery includes a color-coordinated, fabric-covered, two-meter-long USB-C to USB-C cable and a short instruction manual. Once again, a charger was omitted, which I thought was a bit of a shame considering the estimated price of the charging station.

The Stand One Max can be installed in just a few seconds: simply plug the USB-C cable into the corresponding port on the back of the charging station and connect it to the socket using a power supply with at least 30 watts. By opting for a separate charging cable that is not directly connected to the charging station, you can easily replace it yourself if it becomes defective, without having to throw away the entire station or send it back to the manufacturer.

Material mix of glass and metal

The NOMAD Stand One Max is definitely one of the heaviest and most stable 3-in-1 charging stations I’ve ever had on my desk. A completely rubberized base ensures a secure hold on the desk or bedside table. The charging station is made of a mix of materials: The housing is made of high-quality metal and a white glass panel for the Qi2 charging option. The circular Qi2 charging pad for the iPhone itself is made of dust- and scratch-resistant TPU, so that the iPhone always sits firmly magnetically and doesn’t slip. The base plate, on which the AirPods are placed in a small recess and charged via Qi, is made of matt white plastic.

Overall, the Nomad Stand One Max is an absolutely beautiful and aesthetic charging product that is probably unrivaled on the current market. When looking at it, it kept coming to mind that the charging station could have come from Apple itself due to the simple but elegant design.

Apple Watch and AirPods get in the way

The Stand One Max measures 8.2 x 16.1 x 1.3 cm and weighs around 862 grams and actually stays firmly on the surface when you want to pick up an iPhone that has been placed on it. A raised Qi2 charging puck also allows you to wrap your fingers around the iPhone so you can easily remove it: this is definitely something that has been thought through in the product design.

However, the combination of the Apple Watch charging point on the right front of the charging station and the charging recess for the AirPods directly behind it was not fully thought through. For example, if you have an Apple Watch with a completely closed wristband that you simply pull over your wrist, such as the Solo Loop, the braided Solo Loop or the Sport Loop, it will be difficult to put the Apple Watch in front and the AirPods behind it at the same time without the watch wristband and the AirPods charging case getting in each other’s way. A simple swap of the two charging surfaces by moving the watch charging puck to the back, as I know from other 3-in-1 charging stations, quickly solved the problem. Finally, it is important to know: the angle of the watch charging puck cannot be adjusted; it is firmly mounted on the base.

The new NOMAD Stand One Max is now available in the colors Carbide and Silver for 160 euros in the NOMAD webshop, although the dark version is currently sold out. As already described in the specifications above, a 30W power adapter is not included in the delivery; this must be provided by the customer. With flat rate shipping, delivery to Germany costs a one-off fee of 11 euros, regardless of the value of the goods ordered.

My conclusion

The NOMAD Stand One Max is a particularly elegant and high-quality charging station for iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods, but the price is quite high.
