Viktorija Golubic has avoided another opening defeat. The 31-year-old from Zurich defeated the Chinese Wang Xiyu (WTA 95) in 2 hours 39 minutes at the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing and, despite a slump, won 7:6 (7:5), 0:6, 6:3. The top-ranked Swiss (WTA 96) had previously lost her opening match a maximum of six times in the series, and now she had a rare success.

Donna Vekic, the Olympic finalist from Paris, is waiting in the second round. The Croatian (WTA 20) received a bye at the start. The only duel so far is against Golubic in June 2023 at the grass tournament in Nottingham.
