Also in Germany: Disney+ starts measures against account sharing

After Netflix successfully implemented measures to prevent account sharing across multiple households, Disney+ is now also starting to implement measures to prevent account sharing. Sharing passwords across multiple households will be prevented in the future. As with Netflix, additional users can be added.

Additional membership from 4.99 euros per month

In Germany, Disney+ has also already provided information about additional membership on the website. The price list has also already been expanded to include additional members. Accordingly, an additional member who lives outside of your own household costs 4.99 euros per month for Disney+ Standard with advertising – i.e. 1.00 euros less than if you sign your own contract. For Disney+ Standard, the additional member costs 5.99 euros per month and for Disney+ Premium it is also 5.99 euros per month. An additional membership for Disney+ therefore always costs less than a normal subscription.

Additional memberships can only use the tariff of the main account. As an additional member, you cannot use a 4K stream if the main account has booked the ad-free standard subscription to Disney+.

The price for the additional member is paid by the main account, and Disney+ also does not offer the option for the additional user to cover their own costs. A new additional member must also live in the same country as the creator of the main account. However, the additional member receives their own login details and therefore no longer has access to the main account.

Only one stream as an additional member

With all three additional Disney+ memberships, parallel streams on a second device are not permitted; only one stream is possible at a time. Netflix’s handling is the same. With the full Disney+ subscriptions, however, two to four streams are always possible in parallel.

In addition, there is only one profile, that of the additional member. They cannot add another profile for other family members to their account.

Maximum of 1 additional member when subscribing directly through Disney

However, only one additional member can be added per account and, according to old information, the option to add a member outside the household is only available if you have taken out the Disney+ subscription directly with Disney+ and not through a third-party provider such as Telekom.

Transfer profile to Disney+

The owner of the main account can also transfer a profile to a new Disney+ account if a user with whom the password was previously shared now wants to open their own account. This way, the watchlist, history and other settings are retained.

Disney says it will analyze account usage to detect account sharing and ensure that the account is only used in one household. However, confirmation of the local network, as with Netflix, is not yet necessary.

Continue using Disney+ on vacation

Disney+ should still be able to be used on vacation. If the streaming service detects that a new device is in a location that is not part of the household, you can use the fact that you are currently traveling or mark the location as your new home.
