Company behind Genshin Impact takes action against leaks, will now get the true identity of users on X

The major corporation behind Genshin Impact is not a stingy bunch when it comes to leaks. Publisher Cognosphere now wants to restrict user disclosure on X.

How does Genshin combat leaks? Genshin Impact publisher Cognosphere issued a copyright infringement notice to several X.com users in 2023 for distributing unpublished information about Genshin Impact.

In order to investigate this copyright infringement, Cognosphere is asking X.com to reveal the user’s true identity. The publisher of the gacha game suspects that there is only one user behind the various accounts.

But Elon Musk’s company refused to disclose the identities and wanted the request to be examined in court. It referred to the First Amendment, which protects freedom of speech. The California court has now decided against X.com’s objection.

What is the situation in court? The state of California decided in favor of the Chinese company. Now the company X Corp. is once again under pressure. Judge Peter H. Kang, who announced the verdict, is also upset. He criticizes the objection from X Corp.’s lawyers for unnecessarily holding up the proceedings.

Cognosphere’s request was justified, the California court said. Unpublished content posted by users is not protected speech under the First Amendment, Judge Kang said. This means that the publishers of Genshin Impact now at least have the upper hand in the fall.

What happens next? The Court encourages the companies to meet to discuss the matter in person, so that constant intervention by the Court is not necessary. The parties should seek a cooperative solution to find an economical, efficient and appropriate consequence for the actions of the users on X.
