MATCH REPORT | China Open 2024: Complicated comeback for Jannik Sinner in Nicolas Jarry’s opening win

Jannik Sinner is in the second round of the 2024 China Open, but to say he had an easy time might not be the truth, as he had to stage a comeback to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 against Nicolas Jarry.
Sinner had a great time in Asia last year, winning the China Open and then going on to compete successfully in the Shanghai Masters. This was also the birth of the Sinner we all know now. He fell ill in a garbage can during his match in Beijing and ironically went on to become one of the best players in the world.

Sinner, unlike last year when he had a point to prove, has just won the US Open, is still very rusty and can be tackled. Something that Nicolas Jarry had hoped for and with which he was successful early on.

Jarry’s powerful serve and forehand not only caused Sinner problems, but ultimately brought him down. Jarry dictated the rally and hit 11 winners in the first set. Seven more than Sinner and won the first set 6-4.

Jarry made an early break and held it thanks to his aggressive play, which included 13 unforced errors. But the tide turned when Sünder made the first break in the second set and moved 3-0 ahead. He fought Jarry from the baseline and increased the tempo to put the momentum on his racket. He had no trouble winning the second set 6-3.

Things got even more volatile in the third set, as Sinner applied pressure and broke before winning the set 6-1. The job was done, but he didn’t have to struggle for long.

Next up is Stan Wawrinka or Roman Safiullin. A difficult second round if he’s not on form, but he’s shown in glimpses that it’s all about finding his game and being consistent.
