North Carolina gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson hires Trump-friendly lawyer to investigate allegations on porn websites

North Carolina gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson hires Trump-friendly lawyer to investigate allegations on porn websites

North Carolina gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson hired a lawyer who previously worked for former President Trump to investigate allegations that Robinson made controversial comments on a porn website.

Robinson, the current Republican lieutenant governor who is running against Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein to replace Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper in the swing state, hired Northern Virginia-based Binnall Law Group to investigate the allegations made in a CNN report published earlier this week.

“Normally, an investigation like this, conducted by the Department of Justice and the FBI, would take months or years,” Binnall told Fox News Digital. “We can’t do that in this case because voters need answers before the election. So we’re going to move very quickly and still give them a very comprehensive report.”

“He absolutely denies saying any of the things that are in the CNN post,” Binnall said of Robinson. “My investigation will be focused on following the facts. We will investigate this vigorously. We will leave no stone unturned. We will be very, very aggressive. And the citizens of North Carolina deserve nothing less than a full investigation into this matter, and that is exactly what we will do.”

“One of the problems with these surprise hype reports about somebody in October is that you don’t have enough time to respond fully and show voters that the allegations were simply false and that voters could end up being deceived,” Binnall said. “And that’s why my team is clear about the importance of moving quickly — very, very quickly and decisively to get to the truth and get to a point where we can take full ownership of the true facts of this case.”

The CNN report resurfaced comments Robinson allegedly made on a porn site message board more than a decade ago, in which he called himself a “black NAZI,” said he enjoyed transgender pornography, said he preferred Hitler to then-President Barack Obama in 2012 and criticized the late Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. as “worse than a maggot.”

Robinson has denied saying those words, but Republicans have begun to distance themselves from the candidate who, if elected, would be North Carolina’s first black governor. Trump did not mention Robinson during the Republican presidential nominee’s campaign rally in Wilmington, North Carolina, on Saturday. He had already endorsed Robinson before the March primaries and spoken at other Trump events.

The Republican Governors Association announced Monday that it would not renew its ad buys in North Carolina. In an X-post Wednesday, Robsinson said he had spoken with Republican leaders across the state and made it clear that “this is an election about policy, not personalities. Now is not the time for intra-party bickering and nonsense.”

“The allegations against me are outright lies, fabricated to distract voters from Josh Stein’s disastrous record,” Robinson said in a statement to Fox News Digital about the investigation. “The great people of North Carolina have a right to the truth, and I will fully commit to ensuring they know it with complete transparency.”

Although the investigation is still in its early stages, Binnall, who has represented former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn and former Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) in the past, said his investigators include a former FBI agent and that they are working quickly.

Trump campaign attorney Jesse Binnall arrives at a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing to discuss election security and the 2020 election process in Washington, DC, on December 16, 2020.

Republican from swing state denies involvement in porn scandal and dismisses it as “tabloid trash”

“We’re just at the very beginning of our investigation,” Binnall told Fox News Digital. “But I know from my years as a lawyer that it’s very common for people, particularly in politics, to twist the facts to tell a particular narrative. And there are countless ways right now that that information can be manipulated using technology and other means. We don’t yet know the full extent of that manipulation.”

Rather than pointing the finger at CNN, Binnall claimed, “There are left-wing actors in this country who are consistently out to lie and deceive the American people by dropping stories and allegations late in the political cycle and trying to mislead people.” He cited as examples claims made in the media before the 2020 election that the Hunter Biden laptop story might be disinformation, as well as unproven allegations that Trump colluded with Russia before the 2016 election.

“Wait and see how the facts unfold. Wait and see. And judge for yourself, because these are very scandalous allegations,” Binnall said. “I think there’s a reason they came to light very late in the campaign. But we’re going to get to the bottom of this, and so my advice to voters in North Carolina is just to wait and judge the facts for yourself.”

When the CNN report first appeared, Robinson released a video statement comparing it to the “high-tech lynching” that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas said he faced when he was accused of sexually harassing Anita Hill during his confirmation process for the Supreme Court.

Binnall agreed that’s exactly what his client is going through. “Clarence Thomas went through hell. I think all Americans know that now. It was a high-tech lynching of Clarence Thomas, an attempt to destroy a very, very good man, and that could very well be the same thing here,” Binnall said. “But instead of guessing what the facts are going to be, we’re going to follow the facts. We’re going to let the facts guide us in this case.”

“When someone has nothing to hide, they want a full investigation,” Robinson’s attorney added. “And that’s why I think it’s important that Mr. Robinson has reached out to us directly to conduct that investigation and then take the appropriate action based on the results.”
