Modlin fired the bullet that ended his life as police attempted to handcuff the 27-year-old for allegedly shooting a McBee police officer the night before.

But before he ended his life, Modlin reportedly fired shots that killed a police dog and injured a Lee County deputy sheriff.

The deputy and police dog were shot near Una Road in Lee County, where authorities reportedly found Modlin after the South Carolina Department of Law Enforcement issued a blue alert.

The Horry County Police Department is investigating the police-involved shooting in Lee County and SLED is investigating the police-involved shooting in McBee.

The HCPD was assigned to investigate the incident in Lee County, so a non-directly involved agency would lead the case.

Both investigations are active and ongoing.
