The Annapurna massif lies in the interior of Nepal. In its valleys, which are between 1,500 and 3,000 meters high, there is a very special climate – with very cold winters and oppressive heat in summer. Special inhabitants have nested in the plant diversity: the giant bees Apis laboriosa. These deep black and robust insects can grow up to three centimeters long. Every year they build a single, large nest on rocky overhangs, about a meter long and 80 centimeters in diameter. The region’s most famous honey hunter, Lal Bahadur, sets out for sweet gold every spring – risking his life in the process. But honey is more than just a sweet treat for people, it is also a panacea and intoxicant. Before Lal Bahadur sets out, he has to choose his traveling companions. Together they make the working materials for the dangerous undertaking out of bamboo: ropes, baskets, hooks and, above all, a 50-meter-long rope ladder. There can be no mistake because Lal Bahadur’s life literally hangs by a thread while hunting for honey. The day of the honey hunt has come: after four hours they reach a bare rock wall where the bees have built their nest. Barefoot and without protective clothing, the honey hunter climbs down the ladder, which his companions hold with their bare hands. Now he drills two holes in the nest wall and tries to pull a small loop through them. The trick is to catch the honeycomb as soon as it comes away from the rock. Nothing can go wrong now, otherwise all the effort will have been in vain?
